'Come on...' - Tom English baffled by what Cyriel Dessers did in Rangers draw v Hearts

Tom English was left baffled by Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers after failing to score in the 3-3 draw against Hearts on Saturday (18 May).

Ross McCausland squared the ball across the 29-year-old, but with the ball slightly behind his path, could only fire straight at Zander Clark before Lawrence Shankland scored the opener for Hearts.

Despite scoring 22 goals in all competitions this season, Dessers has been the subject of immense scrutiny for some of his all-round performances, and a moment like this has only added to it.

Speaking live via BBC Sportsound on Saturday (18 May, 1:21 pm), English said: “Dessers is gesturing to play the ball in front of him, but come on…

“He’s right in front of the goal and the goalkeeper is scrambling to regain his ground. He should still score.”

Cyriel Dessers continues to baffle in Rangers v Hearts

With 22 goals this season, there is no doubt that Dessers possesses the ability to be a decent goalscorer for the Gers and has improved massively since the arrival of Philippe Clement.

Despite this, Rangers are likely to delve into the transfer market during the summer for a brand-new striker, especially if the club want to be able to compete with their Old Firm rivals Celtic for the title.

The Nigerian forward has been criticised throughout the season, mainly for his ability to hold the ball up, compete in duels to keep possession and hit the back of the net in crucial moments.

While the Hoops have already lifted the Scottish Premiership title, Rangers have an extremely important Scottish Cup final to prepare for, and Dessers’ miss in the first half will not add any confidence ahead of the clash.

Clement’s side will face Celtic at Hampden Park on Saturday 25 May, which will certainly be an opportunity for the striker to prove himself in the final game of the season.
