Celtic could look to bring in a younger goalkeeper after a shock move to sign Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland defender Alan Hutton explained that the 35-year-old would not represent a long-term option for the Hoops, but his experience is what the club needs in goal.

It was suggested that a younger option could learn from him and develop into their first choice option, should Celtic explore further deals.

After the departure of Joe Hart when he retired at the end of last season, Celtic have been searching for a new option in the transfer market.

Dubravka emerged as a surprise option, but Hutton insisted his experience playing in front of demanding crowds and his recent game time at Newcastle has put him in a strong position.

Dubravka made 30 appearances for the Magpies last season in the absence of Nick Pope, sleeping eight clean sheets – five of which came in 23 Premier League appearances.

Hutton explained that this playing time has lined him up for the move to Parkhead, with similarities to the arrival of Hart in the latter stages of his career.

It did come out of the blue, if I’m honest,” he told Football Insider.

That’s the type of player that they’re going to go for. I know he’s 35, but he played the last part of the season when Nick Pope got injured.

Understandably, they’re going with somebody with his experience, I think that’s what you need when you’re playing in goal for Celtic and Rangers.

You look at the bigger names they’ve had and it’s gone really well, compared to taking a different option it’s not quite worked out.

He’s used to playing in front of big crowds with lots of pressure and he’ll be able to deal with that.

They could bring in another goalkeeper to learn from him and become the starter in the future.

Maybe that’s the way they’re going, but for now, he could be a good option.”

In other news, Celtic’s deal to sign Adam Idah has hit a stumbling block.
