Dan Bardell has praised James Maddison for his England statement after being dropped but he didn’t feel it was a surprise that the Tottenham star was omitted by Gareth Southgate.

The attacking midfielder flourished initially under Ange Postecoglou before his injury played its part on his season and he didn’t quite bounce back.

This saw him dropped from the England squad ahead of the European Championships before he released a well-written statement on X (6 June) sharing his disappointment.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes he probably deserved to be removed from the squad but praised his professionalism for his social media post.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell said: “I think his handling of it was good and fair. I’m not that surprised not to see him in there because the second half of the season, when he came back from injury, it didn’t look like the same James Maddison.

I think there are more surprising omissions than him. He went to the last World Cup and didn’t play a second so I’m not surprised to see him not in the team.

When it comes to tournaments and the big decisions, the big games, I’ve never felt like Southgate really trusts him.”

James Maddison has Tottenham focus after England heartache

Maddison has never had the best of luck with England after great form over the years with both Spurs and Leicester City.

Since 2021 he has only managed to feature in seven appearances for his country despite having over 110 club appearances in that time [FotMob].

It has to be said that the end of his season was not good enough which coincided with a general dip in form for Spurs in general.

Maddison hasn’t scored a competitive goal since 10 March in the thrashing of Aston Villa which went on to mean nothing in the race for Champions League qualification.

That’s 11 games without a goal to end the season compared to three in his first 11 since moving from Leicester in the summer.

At 27 years old it may be a tough ask for him to feature in an international tournament with England again given the next World Cup isn’t until 2026.
