Dan Bardell suggests new 'year-on-year deal' for Rangers to keep exit-linked star

Dan Bardell has suggested Dujon Sterling as the potential new Rangers captain if James Tavernier is to leave this summer.

The Scottish Sun has reported (20 June) that there is “uncertainty” surrounding the Englishman and his future at Ibrox beyond this summer.

He has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and a reunion with former Gers manager Steven Gerrard with Al Ettifaq.

If he were to leave, the Light Blues would need a new captain and Sky Sports journalist Bardell has assessed the options surrounding Tavernier and the captaincy.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Bardell said: “Tavernier has been synonymous with Rangers.

At any club, you need players who understand the fabric of the club and have been there for a while and he ticks that box.

I think they should look at his contract and try and keep him there for as long as possible. A year-on-year deal may work better as opposed to a multi-year contract.

It’s important to have players like that around the place who can influence everyone around them.

If he leaves then someone like Sterling could be an option but he was somewhat injury-prone last season so that may go against him. Whoever they choose will have a lot to live up to.

Dujon Sterling could be Rangers captain

It is frustrating that Tavernier could depart this summer given the years of service that he has given to Rangers over the years.

His importance has been key across multiple seasons and he has been key to the best moments the club have had like the Europa League.

With that being said, if he is to leave for Saudi Arabia, fans will understand given the financial aspect of contracts the league can offer.

Meeting back up with Gerrard may also prove to be a factor that sways Tavernier towards a move to the Middle East.

All this would result in Philippe Clement without a captain ahead of the new season and Sterling has been discussed by the Four Lads podcast.

Rangers player Dujon Sterling
Rangers may already have an ideal replacement for James Tavernier in the form of Dujon Sterling.

He is someone who leads by example on the pitch but his injury concerns may prove to be a limiting factor to his captaincy potential.

There is a decision to be made should Tavernier depart from Ibrox this summer.

In other Rangers news, a replacement option for James Bisgrove has been identified after Middle East move.
