Gary Keown did not hold back on his verdict of the bizarre situation involving Rangers striker Danilo prior to the Champions League defeat to Dynamo Kyiv.
The club posted a video of the injury-hit striker entering Hampden Park for the clash that saw the Gers beaten 2-0 (3-1 on aggregate) to crash out of the third-round of qualifying.
Supporters were quick to raise concerns about the fact the 25-year-old appeared to be heavily limping, with Philippe Clement having to answer questions about it following the game – something Keown labelled “absurd”.
Writing in his Scottish Mail on Sunday column (18 August, pages 98 and 99), he opined: “Rangers have Cyriel Dessers, who has all the calmness and composure in pressurised situations of a cornered raccoon, and Danilo, who only appeared on the radar this week because the manager found himself in the absurd situation of having to answer questions about the injury-hit Brazilian limping out of the Hampden tunnel on a club video hauled off the internet when folk started asking why he looked like a pensioner doing the cripwalk.”
Danilo footage exemplifies Rangers circus
We are not even out of August yet and already the campaign has had a season’s worth of calamities.
The fiasco involving the redevelopment of the Copland Road Stand at Ibrox and the subsequent scramble to find a temporary home was not a great start to proceedings.
The news that away supporters will again not be in attendance for the first two Old Firm derbies of the season has, understandably, led to renewed outrage.
And a muddled strategy in the transfer window has left the squad looking depleted and in desperate need of quality.
So, by contrast, the footage of Danilo and the subsequent fallout is probably quite tame. But it is in keeping with a theme of ineptitude that is plaguing the early days of this season.
A strong run of performances is badly needed on the pitch to lift the mood around the fanbase that is for sure. Let’s hope they can deliver.
In other Rangers news, Michael Stewart was delighted by what he saw from one Gers ace versus St Johnstone.
