Darren Ambrose reacts to reports Newcastle could soon sell Callum Wilson and replace him with PL striker

Darren Ambrose has issued his verdict on reports that Newcastle United could look to sell Callum Wilson and replace him with Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle look set to step up their transfer business in the coming days, having, so far, only announced a move for Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly, who is soon available on a free transfer.

It seems that their next signing could be a new striker, with reports suggesting that Newcastle hope to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the coming days, with the Everton forward approaching the final year of his contract at Goodison Park.

Calvert-Lewin has had a couple of frustrating years on Merseyside due to injury, but he has previously shone in the Premier League. So it appears to be a move which makes sense as Eddie Howe looks for cover for Alexander Isak.

And it seems that Calvert-Lewin moving to Tyneside could mark the end of Callum Wilson‘s spell at the club, with talkSPORT reporting that Newcastle are open to a sale. Like Calvert-Lewin, Wilson’s contract expires next year.

Wilson is coming towards the end of his career at the highest level, but speaking on talkSPORT, Darren Ambrose admitted that he is not entirely convinced about the logic behind these moves.

“I think Callum Wilson offers you a little bit more than Dominic Calvert-Lewin, the pace he can have going in behind, he can hold it up, he’s good in the air as well,” he said.

“Calvert-Lewin’s probably a little bit better in the air, he’s a lot taller. But I really like Callum Wilson, he’s an out and out goalscorer. But the argument is, as you’ve said, with both of these, they can’t stay fit. £25 million in the grand scheme of things, it’s crazy to say, in today’s climate, but it’s not that much for a centre forward.”

How the two forward’s Premier League careers compare

Interestingly, the two forwards have actually played a very similar number of Premier League games, with Wilson featuring in England’s top-flight eight more times than the Everton man.

It is the current Newcastle player who has the edge over Calvert-Lewin, having scored 88 goals in the Premier League – 34 more than the Everton star. He also comes out on top for assists.

Calvert-Lewin is more than five years younger than Wilson, so he obviously has the advantage on that front.

He will have a point to prove if he does make the move, particularly as it feels as though Newcastle fans know what they are going to get from Wilson after the last few years.
