David Edgar shares permanent Rangers exit update as defender completes loan transfer

Rangers defender Ben Davies’ move to Birmingham City is just a straight loan deal between the two clubs, according to David Edgar.

The Heart and Hand host reported via X on Sunday (25 August) that the Englishman’s temporary switch to St Andrew’s doesn’t include an option or obligation to make his stay south of the border permanent.

Birmingham City confirmed the signing of the former Liverpool defender on loan until the end of the season, with the deal still subject to international clearance at this stage.

Davies’ departure is reportedly set to give Philippe Clement the freedom to make more additions to his first-team squad ahead of the 30 August transfer deadline [Daily Record, 23 August].

How much did Rangers get for Ben Davies’ exit ahead of Ibrox transfer deadline?

In an ideal world, Rangers would have included an option or obligation for Birmingham to make Davies’ loan switch permanent, as it is clear the Englishman is not in Clement’s long-term plans at Ibrox.

The Gers boss isn’t blessed with loads of options at centre-back currently, especially with Robin Propper and potentially Leon Balogun sidelined, but he was still willing to let the former Liverpool man head out temporarily.

When Davies has featured, he has never looked particularly comfortable in a Light Blues shirt and the most important thing for the Gers this summer was finding a way to get their highest earners off of their wage bill.

Regardless of whether or not a permanent clause was included in this move, Rangers will have managed to at least get a portion of the centre-back’s wages away from Ibrox and into League One.

Hopefully, he won’t be the only player to exit Glasgow between now and the end of the transfer window as Clement’s side need all the money they can find to find a few more last-minute additions ahead of the deadline.
