David Ornstein shares Branthwaite and Everton update after Liverpool transfer links

David Ornstein has admitted links between Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite and Liverpool aren’t “credible” ahead of the transfer deadline.

The England international has been linked with the Goodison Park exit door throughout the summer transfer window, with Manchester United seeing multiple offers rejected by the Toffees [Liverpool Echo, 19 August].

While speculation emerged on social media that Arne Slot’s side were keen on the 22-year-old this summer, The Athletic’s Ornstein believes the Reds aren’t actively looking to sign him.

Speaking at The Overlap Fan Debate (22 August, 35:40) he said: “There were these online rumours and bookmakers odds were tumbling quickly on Jarrad Branthwaite in recent days.

“You do these checks around these sorts of things and it clearly doesn’t seem to be one that’s credible, there’s not a situation there.

“Everton intend to keep hold of him and I don’t think Liverpool are actively going for him, but what you do pick up in conversations is that Liverpool are looking in that position.”

Will Jarrad Branthwaite exit Everton amid Liverpool transfer rumours?

While it always seemed unlikely that Liverpool would push to sign Branthwaite in the final days of the transfer window, it is excellent news that Ornstein doesn’t believe a deal will happen in the next week.

The Athletic journalist is one of the most connected names in the modern footballing world so if he doesn’t believe the speculation around this transfer is credible, that is as close to confirmation as fans can get.

Branthwaite may have been sidelined at the start of this season, but he is a crucial part of what Sean Dyche is building at Goodison Park and losing him at this stage of the window would have been a nightmare for the Everton boss.

While there will be an acceptance both within the club and its supporters that the England international could leave in January or even next summer, it will be on the Toffees terms if and when that transfer is completed.

Who knows what sort of fee the Blues could command in a year’s time?
