Report: What happened with Djed Spence after Tottenham team training finished in Tokyo

Tottenham Hotspur are currently in Tokyo, Japan where they will be playing one pre-season friendly before moving on to South Korea.

Ange Postecoglou is returning to his former home having managed Yokohama F. Mariners for three years prior to being appointed as the Celtic manager.

And his Tottenham squad have been putting in the work since arriving in Asia earlier this week with training sessions ahead of Saturday’s friendly.

The Lilywhites will take on the J-League champions Vissel Kobe at the national stadium where Postecoglou will likely field two separate XIs as he has done in the previous two friendlies.

It seems there is one player in Djed Spence who is looking to really impress the Spurs boss this summer and he has just been spotted doing something encouraging during Friday’s open training session.

What Djed Spence did in Tottenham’s open training on Friday

Coming into the summer, there looked to be only outcome for Spence’s future in north London.

Spence has received interest from Genoa where he spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign after his time at Leeds United was cut short.

But something has happened in the opening two pre-season friendlies which not many people will have seen coming

The right-back has now shown a real turnaround in both performance and attitude to a point where Spence could now be earning himself an opportunity under Postecoglou.

According to Alasdair Gold, Djed Spence was spotted taking part in some one-on-one coaching after the other Spurs players had finished.

The right-back started the drill with coach Matt Well whilst some other players were practising their free-kicks, passing and shooting.

But the defensive drill where Spence had to prevent crosses from being put into the box went on even after his teammates had finished up.

It is proving to be quite the turnaround in Spence’s career after another turbulent campaign.

Djed Spence could be the perfect Pedro Porro alternative

Last season, Spurs were crying out for a backup right-back who was able to provide a like-for-like replacement for Pedro Porro.

Instead, they had Emerson Royal who now looks set to leave Tottenham with AC Milan really pressing for his signature.

But Spence is known for being a right-back who is able to push on into the final third and that is something Emerson struggles with.

Tottenham came into the summer needing to sign a backup right-back, they may have now just realised their answer was staring them in the face.
