Arsenal played Southampton at the weekend, and this game will have been an emotional one for Aaron Ramsdale.
The England international returned to the Emirates for the first time since leaving the club last summer, and he returned with a point to prove.
Aaron Ramsdale still has a good relationship with Mikel Arteta, but there must be an element of wanting to prove the Arsenal manager wrong after he unceremoniously dumped the goalkeeper last season.
Ramsdale ultimately ended up on the wrong side of a 3-1 defeat, but, individually, his performance was solid enough.
Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, David Seaman has been discussing Ramsdale’s showing at the weekend, and he says that he actually messaged Ramsdale before the game to show some support and give him some advice.
What David Seaman messaged Aaron Ramsdale
Seaman shared the details of his message to Aaron Ramsdale.
“He mentioned me, yeah, and it was nice, and I text him before the game. I said, brilliant interview on Sky, play your game, and have a belter.
“I wanted him to have a belter because no matter what the score was I wanted him to play well,” Seaman said.
What Arsenal fans chanted at Aaron Ramsdale
Ramsdale must’ve been emotional upon his return to the Emirates, but his nerves will have settled quickly during the game.
Indeed, while it can sometimes be awkward and uncomfortable to play in front of your old fans and against your former teammates, the Arsenal supporters were characteristically classy at the weekend.
The Arsenal fans actually serenaded Ramsdale during the game, chanting ‘England’s number one’ at the goalkeeper as the action unfolded.
Ultimately, Ramsdale tasted defeat against his old side, but there’s no shame in losing to this incarnation of Arsenal as they’ve managed to become almost unbeatable at home as of late.
Ramsdale will face Arsenal again later this season at St Mary’s and he’ll be hoping to regain the bragging rights against his former side after this defeat.
Ramsdale will always have a soft spot for Arsenal, but, as with any player facing their former team, he’ll want to show the Gunners that they made a mistake letting him go this summer.
