Philippe Clement’s decision to withdraw Connor Barron left Rangers fans “deeply unhappy” in their 1-0 win over Hearts on Sunday.

The Heart & Hand podcast posted on X (10 November) as Barron left the pitch to be replaced by Dujon Sterling in midfield, with boos coming Clement’s way from all four sides of Ibrox in the 68th minute.

Barron, Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande had helped the Gers to exert a degree of control on the game as they clung onto their early lead, but that all vanished after Barron’s departure in the middle.

Heart & Hand said in the wake of the exit: “Crowd deeply unhappy as Barron is subbed.”

Ibrox crowd turn on Philippe Clement during Rangers v Hearts

While booing a substitution hardly equates to an outright mutiny in the stands, the crowd making their voices felt at how Clement and those above him are handling things is nothing new at Ibrox.

So far, Clement hasn’t been the focus of criticism aimed at the running of the club, with many fans pointing fingers at the Ibrox leadership in the form of banners at several away games recently.

Clement has been spared such action due to him being seen as a “scapegoat” for the board’s failings [Billy Dodds, 20 October], but as the boos and jeers rang around Ibrox on Sunday, it was clear where the blame lie this time around.

It’s undoubtable that of all the Belgian’s new signings amid a summer of chance at Auchenhowie, Barron has stood shoulders above the rest in terms of both minutes on the pitch and his sheer consistency.

He’s fast become one of the first names on the team sheet, and although Clement’s decision was likely done to manage Barron’s minutes, fans would rather see him taken off when games are all-but won.

In other Rangers news, Michael Stewart was confused and enraged at what referee Matthew MacDermid did late in the day at Ibrox.
