Four Lads Had a Dream’s Steven Clifford believes that Philippe Clement may have one final shot to turn things around at Rangers.
In his view, if the Belgian fails to take it, the new CEO and chairman who arrive will have to sack him for dismal performances.
Currently, Gers are struggling as they find themselves in third place – nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen.
Clifford wrote in Rangers Review on 15 November: “For me the writing is on the wall but logically Clement may have one more shot at it. If that shot comes and Rangers fall short, the new chief executive officer and chairman will be in place and one of their first duties may just be to fire a manager who will have no more credit left in the bank.
“That’s a scenario that this board must plan for rather than letting it creep up on us, as it did with several other key positions at the club that still remain dormant.
“The man we all thought had a magic wand on his arrival must start getting results and performances before it becomes too late. To do that almost everything has to change. Clement needs to find that magic touch, and quickly, otherwise Rangers face a third-place finish and another hunt for a successor and a new leader at Ibrox as the club strikes deja vu once more.”
Philippe Clement already has had plenty of chances to prove himself at Rangers
Clement’s tenure at Ibrox has been marked by underwhelming performances, and the persistent gap in the league standings after 11 games underscores a lack of progress.
Given the high expectations and investment in the squad, the fact that Rangers are nine points adrift of the top teams suggests that the Belgian has indeed had ample opportunity to turn things around.
His initial appointment was met with optimism due to his previous successes, but the current situation reflects a failure to implement a winning formula.
The patience shown by the board could be seen as giving Clement the benefit of the doubt, but with the season well underway and the team not showing signs of closing the gap, the argument for his dismissal becomes compelling.
The strategic planning from the board should consider the long-term health of the club and if Clement cannot deliver results soon, his position must become untenable.
A quicker resolution on his future is likely to be made once the new CEO and chairman have been appointed.
In other Rangers news, the injury sustained by a first-team player is worse than first expected and it will keep out until mid December.
