Mark Guidi has told Rangers not to “go back” to Ryan Kent reminding Philippe Clement of the £10.5million hole at Ibrox.
The Light Blues are reportedly on alert after the English winger mutually terminated his contract with Fenerbache, having left the Gers in the summer of 2023 [Scottish Sun, 17 October].
While it is unclear if Clement is interested in Kent, Go Radio pundit Guidi has urged the Gers to not ditch their recruitment strategy after former chairman John Bennett suggested there was an eight-figure financial hole at Ibrox.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (18 October, 11:08) he said: “I wouldn’t go back and I don’t think you would get him cheap.
“We’ve got to be mindful that Rangers have slashed their wage bill. They don’t want to go back to the £35,000 to £40,000 a week bracket and understandably so.
“There’s a new regime, there’s new financial restraints in place and again rightly so. Let’s not ever forget the words of John Bennett, there’s a £10.5million hole in the club, we can’t keep going back to short-term fixes.
“There has to be a long-term strategy for Rangers and they need to stick to it. I’m sure Ryan Kent will have offers. If he’s willing to come back to Rangers and fall within the wage structure then fair enough I would do it.
“But I would not push the boat out to do it.”
Will Ryan Kent return to Rangers and Ibrox after Fenerbache exit?
While Clement and the Gers could certainly do with a bit more quality out wide this season, it would be naive to assume that Kent would immediately solve all of the problems at Ibrox.
The Englishman was pretty ineffective in his final season in Light Blue and his spell at Fenerbache has been even more disappointing, which begs the question, is he even good enough to feature regularly under Clement?
Partner that with the fact any deal to bring the winger back to Glasgow would be incredibly expensive to complete and it does feel as though the Gers would be better off allowing Kent to move somewhere else this season.
As Guidi suggests, the Light Blues have worked incredibly hard to bring their wage bill down since Clement took over at Ibrox. It would be a big mistake to undo all of that hard work for what is ultimately a short-term fix.
