Ross McCormack was baffled by Jefte’s “totally bizarre” defending for Motherwell’s goal in the Scottish League Cup semi-final against Rangers.
The Brazilian didn’t cover himself in glory defending Steve Sneddon’s cross in the first half, which allowed Andy Halliday to make a late run into the box and score at the back post.
Rangers went on to recover 2-1 at Hampden Park to book a final with Old Firm rivals Celtic but, speaking on the Scottish Football Podcast (4 November), McCormack shared his verdict on the incident.
“I think the fans will need a lot more than that [win v Motherwell] to be convinced,” he said. “I thought they were, first half especially, miles off it.
“They just weren’t at the races. Motherwell deservedly led through Andy Halliday, who attacked it well at the back-post and scored. Jefte, I don’t know where he was going for it. He was running the other way. It’s just totally bizarre, but that summed up their full first-half performance.”
“I thought they were pretty poor. They looked quite nervous, even the sort of players that you can rely on really weren’t at the levels that you thought they would be.”
Jefte needs to buck his ideas up for Rangers
Jefte was brought to Ibrox during the summer transfer window as a direct replacement for the departing Borna Barisic.
The Brazilian had been eyed by Rangers for some time and, after Barisic was allowed to leave upon the expiry of his contract, they finally had the funding and space in their team to bring him in.
The left-back has since cemented his spot at left-back under Philippe Clement, albeit Ridvan Yilmaz has had his troubles with injuries this term.
The Gers’ season thus far has been rather underwhelming and, while there have been moments when Jefte has seemingly oozed class, lately these performances have come far too infrequently.
In truth, the title already looks well beyond Rangers’ reach this season but if they are not careful then it will be a fight for third spot, let alone the top two or the title they are facing.
In other Rangers news, Tam McManus has been left amazed by a claim that a Gers fan made about Cyriel Dessers.
