'Quite sensational': Stephen Warnock wowed by Liverpool player who pulled off a very difficult move tonight

Liverpool secured their fourth Champions League group-stage victory in a row on Tuesday night as they ran out 4-0 winners over Bayer Leverkusen.

Neither the Reds nor Xabi Alonso’s charges could break the deadlock in the first half, with both enjoying sustained spells on the ball but failing to make it count.

However, Liverpool managed to make the breakthrough just after the hour as Curtis Jones threaded a sumptuous ball through to Luis Diaz.

The 27-year-old, who timed his run superbly, duly lifted the ball over Lukas Hradecky in the Leverkusen net for the first goal of the game.

Then, just a few minutes later, Cody Gakpo headed home Liverpool’s second following a Mohamed Salah cross at the back post, the goal standing after a VAR check.

Arne Slot’s charges then put the game beyond Leverkusen’s reach on 83 minutes, Salah again crossing for a teammate as Diaz held off his marker and tapped home.

The Colombia international went on to complete his hat-trick by the end of the game, firing home after Darwin Nunez saw his effort saved.

During the game, former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock praised one of the Reds players on the night for doing something “quite sensational”.

Stephen Warnock hails ‘sensational’ Luis Diaz opener for Liverpool

Warnock, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, was blown away by Diaz’s finish for the first goal, deeming it a very difficult move to pull off.

“We said it might take a moment of individual brilliance to open the scoring, but it has taken two,” he said.

“The ball from Curtis Jones is excellent, but the finish from Luis Diaz is even better.

“To sit the goalkeeper down and dink it over him, at the speed at which he is moving, is quite sensational.”

What next for Liverpool?

Liverpool are next in action on Saturday night as they host Aston Villa in an 8pm Premier League kick-off.

The Reds’ next Champions League match is on Wednesday 27 November as they take on Real Madrid at Anfield.
