West Ham news: David Sullivan makes Adrien Rabiot transfer decision - expert

West Ham chief David Sullivan was right to be ‘wary’ of a deal to bring France star Adrien Rabiot to the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-West Ham striker Frank McAvennie praised owner Sullivan, 75, for the business the club did over the summer window and is ‘happy’ the East London club missed out on the 29-year-old.

Rabiot sealed a move back to his native France, signing for Marseille following his release from Juventus at the end of last season.

West Ham had been linked with a move for the central midfielder but new boss Julen Lopetegui is seemingly happy with the options he has at his disposal.

Sullivan spent an impressive £121.6million throughout the summer transfer window, making them the 10th biggest spenders in all of Europe.

In central midfield, they were able to persuade Carlos Soler and World Cup winner Guido Rodriguez to swap beautiful Paris and sunny Seville for Stratford, East London.

“Sometimes you get people who’ve done it all, been there, seen it, done it, and they just want to go and get a pay packet”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“I’m quite happy with the signings that have been brought in.

“I think David Sullivan is very wary of people coming into West Ham and taking money out of their pockets because it’s happened a lot.

“There have been a lot of players come in, big names and they’ve not kicked a ball and I think he’s wary of that now.

“I think those days are gone, you want somebody who’s going to come into the team and make them better.

“I’m not saying that boy (Rabiot) wouldn’t have but he’s been about and that’s what you’ve got to look at.”
