Everton remain undecided over whether to offer Dele Alli a new contract despite talks with Tottenham to clear the way for one, The Athletic reports.
According to the outlet’s website on 16 July the Toffees haven’t made the decision on whether to re-sign the midfielder whose previous deal expired this summer.
Discussions have been held with Spurs over revising the payment structure involved in the deal which initially brought him to Goodison Park in January 2022.
BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella reported via X on 13 July that a deal had been struck to waive the fee that would have been due if Dele signed a new Everton deal, with future clauses remaining.
Sean Dyche wants Dele rebound at Everton
There is clearly interest from some key people at the club in bringing the 28-year-old back otherwise the subject would never have been broached with Tottenham.
Sean Dyche is said to be hoping for a “spectacular” rebound from the ex-England star [Liverpool Echo, 12 July] as the manager wants to emulate the fitness improvements he oversaw with Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Dele after over a year out with injury.
If he genuinely feels that is possible based on the midfielder’s showings while training with the club during the summer and on the current preseason trip to Ireland then there is a very strong argument to offer a contract.
Dele stated during a live appearance on Sky Sports last season (16 April) that he was targeting the next World Cup for a place in the England squad so if he could return to something close to his previous levels he would be a huge asset for Dyche.
He had also sounded for all the world like an ex-Everton player when speaking that night during the Toffees’ 6-0 thrashing at Chelsea so presumably didn’t expect the opportunity to develop as it current is.
And the financial commitment has to be a sensible one for a club that is still only tentatively coming through a nightmare situation on that front.
Much of the criticism of Dele relates to matters outside of his control and after the club were reportedly paying him £100,000-a-week previously [Mirror] to only get 13 appearances it is their responsibility to get the balance of risk and reward right on that front, which may be the key factor in the final decision here.
