Andy Newport believes the “number one problem” at Rangers is their poor recruitment in the transfer window.
The Gers currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership and are 11 points adrift of league leaders, Celtic.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (27 November), journalist Newport shared his thoughts on why some of the Gers’ summer arrivals haven’t yet hit the ground running and said the club is “desperate” for someone to give the whole operation a clear direction moving forward.
“The number one problem at Rangers, the recruitment has been well short of where it has to be, a lot of money spent and for very little return,” Newport said.
“It’s not as easy as saying it’s one guy or one group of players, it’s at every department at every level of the club there people who bear responsibility and that’s why the club is desperate for change, desperate for somebody to come in and give it that direction and that bit of foresight about where it wants to go.”
Rangers and Philippe Clement need to get their act together
This season has been one the worst in recent memory for the Gers’ fans, with the team drastically underperforming in the Scottish Premiership.
Indeed, the club are in the Scottish League Cup final and have put on a decent showing in the Europa League, but the fact they’re nine points adrift of second-placed Aberdeen is nothing short of a disgrace.
Clement’s future at the club has been brought into question on multiple occasions and to be quite frank, it’s hardly surprising to see fans hoping for him to be sacked.
Of course, there have been some games this season when the Gers have proven their worth but it feels like these performances have been far too irregular.
Clement seems to have a run of bad results but ends up pulling off a miraculous win, such as their 4-0 victory over FCSB in the Europa League back in October which buys him more time.
Only time will tell what the future holds for Clement and the club but at the moment, there’s still a lot of ground that needs to be made up on all fronts.
In other Rangers news, a BBC journalist is torn over whether Philippe Clement should be sacked or not.
