'Different class' - Ferguson in awe of one Rangers player after what he did in 1st half v Kyiv

Rangers winger Ross McCausland left Derek Ferguson in awe with a “different class” moment in the first half of the Light Blues’ clash with Dynamo Kyiv.

Philippe Clement’s side headed into the break of the away leg of their Champions League qualifier 1-0 behind on Tuesday (6 August), with Andriy Yarmolenko opening the scoring late in the first half.

While the home side also had a goal disallowed for an offside, only the woodwork could deny McCausland’s excellent left-footed curling effort which BBC pundit Ferguson believed left the keeper with no chance.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on Tuesday (6 August, 19:22) he said: “That’s different class from McCausland. The keeper is getting nowhere near that, he’s so unlucky.

“But it’s Lawrence finding those little pockets of space and then McCausland, he doesn’t just stand wanting to receive the ball. He’s on the move, driving inside and that curling left shot, he’s so unlucky it doesn’t go into the back of the net.”

Rangers look to qualify for the Champions League

This game was always going to be a big test for Clement’s side and while the Light Blues have looked impressive in possession, they have been too easy to get through without the ball.

The top priority in Poland for Rangers was always going to be heading into the second leg still in the contest and for so much of the half the Gers boss wouldn’t have been too concerned by his team’s display.

Had Cyriel Dessers been a bit quicker to shoot in the opening exchanges after Scott Wright headed across the penalty area, or McCausland’s effort been a foot inside the post, the Light Blues could have been heading into the break with the lead and full of confidence.

However, their mistakes and misses were punished after Yilmaz made a mistake to hand the home side the lead.

But compared to the disappointing opening day draw at Tynecastle, the Gers looked much-improved if still miles off the standard most supporters would have hoped for.
