Philippe Clement admits there’s a financial gulf between Rangers and Lyon ahead of the two sides’ Europa League clash in Glasgow on Thursday night.
The Gers started their Europa League campaign with a bang after managing to triumph 2-0 over Swedish side Malmo away from home on 26 September.
Lyon are, however, a far more difficult opponent to face as they found themselves in the top six of Ligue 1 last term which is an achievement in itself.
Speaking to the Daily Mail (2 October), Clement shared his verdict on the tie.
“I know a lot of players from this squad still from my time in Monaco, but also the players who they brought in for 20, 25, 32 million. It’s a different world,” he said
“This Lyon team has a lot of experience, a lot of players with a really big career, like in Arsenal [Alexandre Lacazette] or Matic in Chelsea, Man United or Tolisso in Bayern Munich.
“And they have a lot of young, exciting talents also, like Cherki, who’s one of the stars of French football, but also the new wingers with Fofana, Nuamah. Zaha also has a big reputation.
“They have two squads with quality players, so that’s always exciting to see what our qualities can show against them. I’m looking forward to that”.
Rangers face Lyon in Europa League
Rangers had a below-par start to the 2024/25 season and didn’t seem to be a title-contending team.
That is until after their 3-0 defeat to Celtic in the Old Firm as, since then, they’ve managed to find themselves in a run of form and are currently on a four-game winning streak across all competitions.
While Lyon are the favourites to come away with all three points, the game will no doubt be a good test for the club, much like Cyriel Dessers suggested.
With the way things have been going for Clement’s men however, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see them triumph and add yet another three points to their tally.
Clement’s future was brought into question on multiple occasions before the Celtic game but, since interim chairman John Gilligan backed him publically on Sky Sports, (24 September) it feels as if his job is safe for now.
A win against the Ligue 1 outfit would no doubt further solidify Clement’s job and perhaps even help spur his team on in their quest for the Scottish Premiership title.
In other Rangers news, Jack Butland has raved about two of his teammates after what they’ve done fo the club.
