Everton have been slammed by The Esk over their “disgraceful” exploitation of supporters regarding a fan token scheme.
The Toffees are one of a number of Premier League clubs to have collaborated with Socios, which is described as a cutting-edge digital asset that aims to revolutionise fan engagement.
The link-up was said to be a way “to provide fans worldwide with access to a unique range of club-related activities, rewards and experiences”.
Questions were raised about the scheme at the time of the link-up being announced, and football finance expert Martin Calladine shared via X [6 August] that the credibility of Socios has been raised in court during a case focused on MetaMask.
In response to the tweet, Everton finance specialist The Esk responded [6 August]: “A disgraceful episode of fan exploitation by those clubs, including my own, @Everton, who participated in the fan token scheme.”
Everton fan token scheme questioned
Reading between the lines, this scheme is basically a way to make supporters feel special, even if they are effectively being asked to purchase things that would perhaps have once been available for free.
Fans were told that, by purchasing tokens – which fluctuate in price constantly – they can participate in polls, unlock rewards and access unique experiences.
The club effectively wanted to squeeze every last penny out of fans, during what is a tough financial period for everyone, all for the sake of being able to vote in a poll.
It is worth stating that Everton are not alone in signing up to the scheme. Indeed, even some of the world’s elite clubs in Real Madrid and Barcelona have done so.
As this court case has highlighted, though, suspicious fans were right to raise doubts. Everton earn enough money from their supporters without having to exploit them further.
In other Everton news, a Sean Dyche transfer priority has been shared.
