Sports finance expert Stefan Borson says Everton will likely be forced to sell either Jarrad Branthwaite or Dominic Calvert-Lewin after their takeover collapse.
Borson was discussing the situation at the club alongside Jim White, Darragh MacAnthony and Troy Deeney on talkSPORT on Tuesday morning [6 August, 11:07] and stated the recent news of Dan Friedkin’s takeover falling through is “really bad” news.
The plight could cause either Branthwaite or Calvert-Lewin to be sold to help repay the increasing debts at Goodison Park, with the Toffees having previously stood firm to keep as many of their prized assets as possible.
“I suspect there’s a pretty strong chance, given where we are, they will sell one of those players either way just to be prudent and cautious,” Borson explained live on air.
“Unless they are certain [Farhad] Moshiri will go into his pocket, which is unlikely, you cannot go through that period without selling a player.
“They have a massive pile of debt that is getting bigger and bigger because they are paying high interest rates on £600m of external debts, maybe even £650m, so the collapse of the Friedkin deal is really bad news for Everton.”
Everton may have to revisit Branthwaite and Calvert-Lewin sales
The progress in negotiations between Moshiri and the Friedkin Group seemed very encouraging, to the point his other football business interest, Roma, have arranged a friendly with Everton to be played this weekend at Goodison.
But the “amicable” breakdown in talks between the parties has left the Toffees at square one with debts racking up and Moshiri unlikely, as Borson says, to commit to further financial assistance.
The club have thus far acted admirably in rebuffing Manchester United’s intense advances for Branthwaite, who is considered the most coveted gem in Sean Dyche’s squad.
Calvert-Lewin was on the cusp of a move to Newcastle United back in late June but the transfer broke down, whilst Amadou Onana recouped the club £50m with his move to Aston Villa last month.
It could be a long and uncertain month for Everton on the transfer front, which overlaps into the worries over the chaos continuing in the boardroom – something Dyche and his team will for now have to put to one side, which is easier said than done for the players concerned.
In other Everton news, Atalanta have approached the club over a potential player swap.
