Bryan King is not excited about Timo Werner possibly starting in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup against Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday (30 October).
The ex-Spurs scout has not been impressed by the German forward’s performances this season.
According to Ange Postecoglou (via the Independent, 29 October), Son Heung-min will once again be unavailable against City. As a result, Werner is expected to start, with Postecoglou keen to offer the 28-year-old an opportunity to impress (via GiveMeSport, 29 October).
However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think that this is a good idea.
“Personally I’d put Brennan Johnson on the left and play Dejan Kulusevski on the right,” King said.
“Bringing Werner in as a starter doesn’t excite me. He’s been given chances but his performances don’t justify him being a regular player.
“If he does come in, he is going to be playing against a quality team in Manchester City, which needs a top performance, and that is something we haven’t seen from Werner this season.
“It will be interesting to see what team City and Spurs play. However, Postecoglou needs to play a strong team, this is his chance to win a competition.”
Timo Werner to start for Tottenham v Manchester City?
If Postecoglou wants to win a trophy this season, the Carabao Cup is a realistic chance. As a result, he mustn’t take the competition lightly and should be looking to start his best possible team, with King urging the Australian to axe one underperforming midfielder.
Therefore, starting Werner might not be such a good idea. However, in fairness to Postecoglou, his options are rather limited with Son unavailable.
Nonetheless, Werner hasn’t been good enough this season. Therefore, if Spurs are to have a chance of beating City, a more creative solution must be found that avoids the need to start the German.
