'Don't fall into a trap' - King concerned after recent Tottenham transfer speculation

Bryan King is concerned about the prospect of Tottenham signing too many young players after recent transfer speculation emerged.

The ex-Spurs scout has warned the club against falling into a similar trap that Chelsea fell into, which would see them with too many youngsters on their books, and not enough space in the first team.

It comes after TBR Football reported (27 September) that Spurs are one of several Premier League clubs interested in Vélez Sarsfield starlet Thiago Fernández, who scouts have dubbed the new Ángel Di María.

However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think this signing is necessary.

“For this kid to be put in that class, it is very flattering,” King said.

“However, there are only so many young players you can bring in.

“Spurs have signed quite a few and have some talented youngsters coming through their own ranks. Therefore, they’ve got to be careful not to flood the club with young players.

“They must make sure they don’t fall into a trap, like Chelsea did, where you have too many players and need to send them out on loan. You want these players at your football club where they have a chance to play with the first team.

“It is alright for interest to be mentioned but going out and buying these players is a different thing. I don’t think Tottenham need to go out and buy this player at the moment.”

Tottenham to sign Vélez Sarsfield starlet Thiago Fernández?

It might be tempting for Spurs to go ahead and sign the talented 20-year-old from Argentina, especially if he has been compared to such a big-name footballer. However, it wouldn’t be wise.

The club already have so many talented young players pushing for first-team spots, most notably 17-year-old Mikey Moore, who King recently shared a behind-the-scenes claim about.

Therefore, signing another player who could block the pathway for Moore or other similar talents a the club isn’t necessary.

In addition, there is no guarantee this player would adapt to English football. As a result, it doesn’t feel like a risk worth taking, especially after the signing of Alejo Véliz from Argentina, who has been speculated to join a Premier League club on loan next season.

In other Tottenham news, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been name-dropped as the club enter into “advanced” investment talks.
