West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez was involved in a heated altercation with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez during their Premier League clash on Saturday.

Chelsea ran out 3-0 winners at the London Stadium with Nicolas Jackson scoring two first-half goals before Cole Palmer found the net with an excellent finish.

West Ham had struggled to trouble Chelsea throughout the game and tensions threatened to boil over early in the second half after Alvarez was given a yellow card for a foul on on Palmer shortly after he scored Chelsea’s third goal.

Fernandez took exception to the challenge on Palmer and angrily approached Alvarez, who covered his mouth but Spanish broadcasters caught the West Ham midfielder saying: ‘I’ll wait for you.’

Alvarez then followed up with: ‘I’ll kill you outside, wherever you want.’

Fernandez the patted Alvarez and replied: ‘Go on, go on.’

The West Ham midfielder was then substituted and replaced by Carlos Soler just six minutes later.

Speaking after his side’s defeat, West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen described the defending for Jackson’s opener as ‘schoolboy stuff’.

‘It’s a massively disappointing game, and one that didn’t go the way we wanted it to,’ Bowen said.

‘We’re really disappointed with how we performed and the result as well.

‘The goals were very easy, especially the first one which came from a free kick – it was schoolboy stuff, you never take your eye off the ball.

‘In the Premier League the players you’re playing against have quality and they can really hurt you. We concede a free kick in the middle of the pitch and we need to be savvy about it, maybe take the yellow card to stop a quick one, because a lot of teams would do it against us.

‘The second goal again, I think we were trying to get after the ball, then the striker’s through on goal and it’s 2-0.

‘You come in at half time obviously disappointed to be 2-0 down, but in the second half you have nothing to lose and can throw everything at it – but we conceded after 90 seconds which again takes the stuffing out of us. It’s a disappointing day all round.’
