Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Newcastle could cause the “end of the Premier League as we know it” if they push for individual broadcast rights.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – reacted to the news that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) are keen to invest in streaming giant DAZN.
Reuters reported earlier this month (7 October) that PIF are among potential bidders exploring the purchase of a minority stake in DAZN worth more than £750million.
DAZN has rights around the world to screen Premier League football.
Wyness has previously told Football Insider (17 October) that PIF may move to take a stake in the streaming giant to further their boxing interests, not football.
Newcastle could spark rapid shift to ‘Super League’, says Wyness
The ex-CEO claimed the Premier League would become a “very poor product” if clubs were allowed to individually negotiate broadcast rights – which is currently against the rules.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There was a big debate and there were days when the bigger clubs tried to get their own broadcast agreement and break up the Premier League.
“That hasn’t happened.
“That has been the great strength of the league. The Premier League negotiate for all the clubs and then splits the revenue accordingly.
“That’s what has made it the great success it has been.
“If we were to go into individual situations for each club, it would be a mess.
“If it did happen, which I don’t think it will, it would be six clubs chasing the title every year and it would be a very poor product.
“It would be the end of the Premier League as we know it, and we’d rapidly be going towards a Super League.”
