'Rich Rangers Fan' in 'North America' could submit Ibrox takeover bid - Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has tipped a “North American consortium” to enter the bidding for a takeover at Rangers.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted any new owner would have to “appoint the right people for a strategic rebuild”.

Rangers are currently without a long-term chairman, CEO or head of football operations after a raft of exits at the Glasgow giants.

Wyness exclusively revealed to Football Insider last month (22 September) that a “Far East investor” is currently weighing up a potential Ibrox takeover bid.

On the pitch, the Gers have slipped even further behind joint-leaders Celtic and Aberdeen after a 1-0 away loss at Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October).

Football Insider revealed on Monday (21 October) that Rangers are stepping up plans to sack Philippe Clement in the wake of the defeat.

‘North American’ takeover possible at Rangers, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’ve always been surprised at the lack of interest in North America.

“There are a lot of rich Rangers fans over there.

“There could be some sort of consortium, although an individual buyer would be best, of wealthy Rangers fans who can get together.

“The crucial thing for them would then be to appoint the right people to the board for a strategic rebuild.

“I’ve been there with Aston Villa and Everton, I know what it takes – and it’s not easy.

“Rangers are facing that challenge right now. They can’t just carry on going from disaster to disaster.”
