Jason Cundy claimed that Everton are one of two “enormous” clubs to underachieve after watching Aston Villa in the Champions League.
The Villans are competing in the Champions League for the first time in 41 years, currently sitting atop the new league table after beating Bologna 2-0 on Tuesday 22 October.
Sean Dyche’s side, on the other hand, are more worried about the threat of relegation rather than battling in Europe, and the Toffees have now been accused of underachieving over the years.
Speaking to a Villa fan live on talkSPORT on Tuesday (22 October, 10:35pm), Cundy said: “There are two football clubs in this country that are enormous and have underachieved – one is Everton and the other is Aston Villa.
“In the last 30 years, both of those football clubs have underachieved.”
Have Everton underachieved over the years?
Underachievement would certainly be the overall feeling at Goodison Park currently, with the Toffees only five points above the relegation zone despite a number of exciting summer signings.
With Dan Friedkin set to become the new owner, and the Toffees ready to move into the new Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, the club looks to be heading into a new era.
Of course, remaining in the Premier League is a must this season. Beginning the next campaign in the Championship would be catastrophic for the club, which is why Dyche is under so much pressure.
By no means is the trophy cabinet empty at Goodison Park, with several First Division titles, FA Cup titles and even a European Cup Winners’ Cup, but trophies have been hard to come by in the modern era.
Everton could definitely be heading into a new era once Friedkin gets his takeover deal over the line, and there is no reason why the Toffees cannot be competing at the top level in a few years.
