'Entire match': Spain's media share surprising criticism of Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister despite scoring
Seems harsh ????
Under Arne Slot of late, Alexis Mac Allister has been subject to a touch more rotation than he’s previously been used to at Anfield.
With the emergence of Curtis Jones at Liverpool, Slot now has to leave one top midfielder on the bench each game, providing everyone is fit.
Against Real Madrid, it was Dominik Szoboszlai who watched on from the bench, with Mac Allister handed a chance in the No.10 role.
It was an opportunity that the Argentina international didn’t pass up, scoring a very tidy goal to put Liverpool 1-0 ahead early in the second half.
And although he received rave reviews from the English press, some reports in Spain weren’t so complimentary.
Alexis Mac Allister told he went ‘missing’ against Real Madrid
In particular, Estadio Deportivo shared a surprise comment about Mac Allister’s performance in their review of the game.
The outlet praised Curtis Jones, who they thought was leading Liverpool’s midfield throughout the game.
But when it came to his midfield partner, the report claimed that Mac Allister ‘had been missing for almost the entire match’.
Thereafter, the 25-year-old was complemented – his ‘great’ one-two with Conor Bradley was mentioned, as well as his endeavour to nearly score a second moments later.
Perhaps Mac Allister was slightly subdued in the first half, but it’s still a harsh comment given he had just decided a game at the very highest level.
Caoimhin Kelleher praised by the Spanish press
Although there were mixed reviews regarding Mac Allister, it was hard to argue that Caoimhin Kelleher was anything but brilliant.
Aside from his penalty save against Kylian Mbappe, Kelleher was also authoritative throughout with both his hands and his feet.
The same report labelled the Republic of Ireland No.1 as ‘immense’ for his efforts, a player who could still be leaving Liverpool in the near future.
Liverpool are prepared to sell Kelleher in a dramatic restructure of their goalkeeping department, a decision fans may already be regretting.
And with Alisson returning in the near future, it would seem incredibly harsh to drop Kelleher, even if that’s likely to be the reality.
