Erik ten Hag confirmed that Mason Mount picked up a knock in the first half of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Brighton.

Mount started his second successive game of the season but was withdrawn at the break with United trailing 1-0 after Danny Welbeck’s opener.

Amad Diallo scored an equaliser after the break but it a last-gasp winner from Joao Pedro in injury time saw the Red Devils slump to a 2-1 away defeat.

There was more misery at full-time when Ten Hag confirmed that Mount’s half-time substitution was enforced and not tactical.

‘It was a decision. he had some problems and an issue,’ the Dutchman told TNT Sport. ‘We know the [injury] history of Mason so therefore we took him out.

‘But I think, also, Joshua is coming better in, we are losing the game, and I think he had a good impact in the game’

A lengthy calf injury saw Mount miss a huge chunk of last season, his first season at Old Trafford since completing a £60 million transfer from Chelsea.

Reflecting further on the nature of the defeat, Ten Hag added: ‘So very disappointing especially when you over long parts of the game have control.

‘We controlled the game in possession and were doing so well and we conceded two unnecessary goals which were very avoidable.’

But the Dutchman did see some positives.

‘I think there were very good parts in the game, he said. ‘We had a lot of control in possession we created good chances, we showed resilience we came back and scored a winning goal – we thought it was a winning goal.

‘It’s a pity but we have to take this, it’s a disappointment but I can take a lot of positives from the performance

‘But we have to learn. You can’t drop points so unnecessarily, if you protect the goal like we do you drop points and top football is about details, we have to do better in such occasions.’
