Estevao reveals he wants to beat ex-Chelsea star’s record when he joins club
The teenager has already set himself a huge target at Stamford Bridge.
Estevao says he wants to ‘make history’ at Chelsea and become the club’s most successful Brazilian of all time.
In June, Chelsea announced that they had completed a £28million deal to sign Estevao, 17, one of the most exciting young talents to emerge in Brazil in recent memory.
Estevao – who will join up with the Blues next summer – has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence since making his first-team debut for Palmeiras last December, racking up 14 goals in 42 appearances for his boyhood team.
With the crucial winner in Palmeiras’ recent victory over Gremio, the teenage sensation became the first player aged 18 or under to register 20 goal contributions (12 goals, 8 assists) in a single Brazilian Serie A campaign.
Often likened to national hero Neymar, Estevao has already been capped twice at international level and will no doubt be desperate to make an impression in Brazil’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Venezuela and Uruguay.
‘Playing for the Brazilian national team is an extra level. It’s the shirt of the greatest world champion. It was a dream come true,’ Estevao told Transfermarkt ahead of Brazil’s double-header.
‘When I was a child, I always said that one day I would be there and I managed to make that dream come true. I was very happy and I hope to wear the national team shirt more often.
‘I was a little nervous, but I was very happy to have my first opportunity.
‘Playing for Brazil is not a burden for me, you know? It is a reason for joy to be wearing the Brazilian shirt and I was happy.
‘I am happy when I am on the field. There is some nervousness, yes, because it is Brazil and because of the people who have already worn this shirt. But I was calm. The group was very relaxed, they all welcomed me well.’
A host of high-profile Brazilians have represented Chelsea down the years with great success, including the likes of Willian, Ramires, Oscar, Felipe Luis and, most recently, Thiago Silva.
David Luiz stands above the rest as the most decorated Brazilian in Chelsea’s history, though, after helping the club win the Premier League, the Champions League, two Europa Leagues and two FA Cups.
Despite the fact he is yet to make an appearance for the Blues, Estevao has already set his sights on bettering his fellow countryman’s trophy haul, adding: ‘I want to make history and be the most successful Brazilian in the club’s history.
‘I want to win titles and show my full potential, show everything I can do.’
On the prospect of swapping Sao Paulo for London, Estevao continued: ‘Everyone is talking to me about Big Ben.
‘I haven’t done much research yet, but I’ve already found out a few things about it on the internet.
‘I’m excited to visit London. Everyone says it’s one of the best cities in the world, that it receives a lot of tourists and everyone praises it. That also influenced my decision to go to Chelsea.
‘We’ll go there at the end of the year. They say it’s cold, but we’re prepared.’
