Euro club 'Accelerate' efforts to complete last-gasp Rangers transfer – report

James Tavernier is back on Besiktas’ agenda as the Turkish side pursue a last-gasp transfer for the Rangers captain, according to Fotomac.

The Turkish outlet reported on 9 September that Besiktas still want an “offensive” right-back before their transfer window closes on 13 September, with their technical staff putting Tavernier back on the agenda.

Reportedly valued at £5.5million and under contract at Ibrox until 2026, Tavernier is still wanted by Besiktas, managed by former Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst, late in the Turkish Super Lig’s window.

Van Bronckhorst reportedly tabled a presentation on Tavernier to his new club’s management, with the 33-year-old’s agent meeting with Besiktas representatives and “receiving information about the costs”.

Rangers face difficult James Tavernier transfer decision

While unlikely to bring in the full £5.5m Tavernier is valued at, the Gers collecting a multi-million pound fee for a player in his mid-thirties would still represent good business from a financial perspective.

Rumours of the long-serving captain’s exit from Ibrox have been a constant throughout the summer, and with Turkey one of the few countries whose window remains open, the option remains open for Tavernier [GiveMeSport, 7 September].

The difficulty of the Gers hierarchy accepting any bid for their skipper, however, creates a depth issue for Philippe Clement’s new-look side, with Tavernier having played every minute of the new season so far.

Selecting a new captain would also have the potential to cause disruption within the squad, as would testing out the likes of Dujon Sterling and new signing Neraysho Kasanwirjo at right-back long term.

While Tavernier’s cards appear to be marked at Ibrox with the prospect of him leaving the club increasingly likely, the Gers may be better suited to wait until January (at least) before sanctioning his departure.
