Euro club want to sign Everton star over alternative option after what he did at Euros - report

Everton star Amadou Onana is ahead of Mikel Merino on Barcelona’s shortlist for a new midfielder after what he did at Euro 2024, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Writing on their website (2 July), the Spanish news outlet report that the Catalan giants were watching actively as Onana competed with Kylian Mbappe during Belgium’s round of 16 clash with France at Euro 2024.

And they were very impressed by his performance and it has helped him move ahead of Real Sociedad’s Merino in the pecking order for a transfer, although there is an acknowledgment any deal will be difficult to do due to the Toffees’ financial demands.

Everton open to Amadou Onana transfer

The club managed to do the business before the 30 June PSR deadline to ensure they complied with all the rules, with Lewis Dobbin joining Aston Villa and Ben Godfrey completing a move to Atalanta.

But there is still an expectation that the Toffees will lose a key player this summer, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s potential transfer to Newcastle not dead and Onana expected to be moved on.

That’s because the club are adamant that they will keep hold of star defender Jarrad Branthwaite, but they still need to raise funds and a sale of Onana is by far the best way to do that.

There is plenty of interest to potentially generate a bidding war and his profile is such that the club will definitely make a profit on the £33m they spent two years ago to bring him from Lille.

Should they find a way to keep him it would be a bonus, but with the player making it clear he wants to leave a deal is expected to happen sooner or later.

In other Everton news, developments are expected next week after an official offer was tabled for a Toffees-linked star.
