Everton are closing in on a deal to seal the return of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, according to the Liverpool ECHO.
Writing on their website [20 August], the outlet reported that Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell see the opportunity as a shrewd move to secure a capable deputy to Jordan Pickford.
The 37-year-old is a free agent after his Queens Park Rangers contract expired at the end of the 2023/24 season and is set to return to Goodison Park one year after leaving the Blues.
Everton set to re-sign Asmir Begovic
While Everton fans may feel somewhat disappointed that the club are moving for a back-up amidst the glaring needs in the starting lineup, this is a smart move for the Toffees.
Begovic knows the club inside and out during his two-year stint between 2021-2023 and will offer much-needed experience to the dressing room [Mark McAdam].
The Blues needed experience among the squad against Brighton & Hove Albion as 39-year-old Ashley Young was sent off in the 3-0 defeat at Goodison Park on Saturday [17 August].
Joel Virginia is currently the backup to Pickford and, will expectedly move down the pecking order following Begovic’s arrival, neither will be expected to replace the England number one between the sticks barring injury.
The Bosnian has a wealth of Premier League experience having previously been the number one at Stoke City and Bournemouth and won the league with Chelsea in the 2016/17 campaign.
It is not the most glamorous signing for Everton but a necessary move to add proven top-flight experience and professionalism to the dressing room, Dyche will be hoping that despite not playing, he will be a positive influence on the squad.
In other Everton news, the Blues are in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt over Junior Dina Ebimbe.
