Everton have agreed a deal to sign Asmir Begovic as a free agent, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian transfer specialist reported via his personal X account [20 August] that the 37-year-old’s new deal at Goodison Park will run until June 2025 after leaving the club last summer.
It is understood that the goalkeeper’s medical is likely to take place in the next 24 to 48 hours after striking a deal with the Toffees to return after a season with QPR in the Championship.
Everton seal deal to bring Asmir Begovic back to Goodison Park
While Jordan Pickford is unlikely to let go of his starting position in the Toffees lineup, there is nothing wrong with adding another experienced mind to the squad before the 2024/25 campaign gets into full swing.
Despite his age, Begovic made 46 appearances for QPR in all competitions last term, becoming a key figure for the London club, so he will certainly be ready to be called upon if needed.
The goalkeeper selection is often a problem for Sean Dyche, with few options available for Pickford to be given a rest, so it is always a surprise when the England international takes up a spot on the bench.
Many fans would have hoped that this season would be Harry Tyrer’s breakthrough campaign following a stellar 2023/24 loan spell with Chesterfield in the National League.
However, Begovic is now likely to take up the second ‘keeper option for the Merseyside club, with Tyrer and Joao Virginia needing to fight it out for the remaining scraps.
By no means is Begovic a bad shot-stopper, having gained experience in leagues all over the world, including a two-year stay at Goodison Park, but the transfer is bound to raise a few eyebrows.
With all the uncertainty surrounding the Toffees now, though, it will do no harm to have a much older, wiser player amongst the group.
