Sky Sports presenter Mike Wedderburn couldn’t believe what Vinny O’Connor said about Everton ahead of the match against Southampton.
The Blues have zero points after four Premier League matches this season, as do Southampton, with the pair set to meet in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Goodison Park on Tuesday [17 September].
Speaking from Goodison Park live on Sky Sports [17 September, 5:41pm] ahead of the team news dropping, O’Connor listed as many as eight changes Sean Dyche could make to the starting lineup and his suggestions left Wedderburn scratching his head.
He said: “Can you imagine if Everton make eight changes and lose? Everton fans aren’t going to have that.”
Everton facing a pivotal clash against Southampton
Everton need a win sooner rather than later after an abysmal start to the season and there will be no better opportunity than facing fellow bottom-of-the-table side Southampton.
While the match has no standing on their position in the Premier League, a good run in the Carabao Cup will go a long way to easing the pressure on Dyche at Goodison Park.
The Blues reached the quarter-final of the competition last season but fell to Fulham on penalties, missing out on a semi-final clash with Merseyside rivals Liverpool after Amadou Onana’s infamous spot-kick.
Dyche has split opinions among fans and pundits alike. His side failed to maintain a two-goal lead for the second consecutive fixture against Aston Villa and became the second Premier League club in history to do so alongside Bournemouth.
Whether it is down to the players or the manager’s tactics is anyone’s guess. Still, the players must share the blame for letting their boss down, with the squad’s mentality under the microscope.
The clash with Southampton provides the perfect respite for Dyche to rotate his side and give opportunities to the new signings to show what they can do in an Everton shirt.
However, should the boss roll the dice on his team selection and still lose, there may be no way back for him at Goodison Park.
