Gavin Buckland has urged Sean Dyche to start Asmir Begovic in goal for Everton against Southampton in the Carabao Cup.
The Toffees welcome Southampton to Goodison Park on Tuesday (17 September) in the third round of the League Cup as they look to pick up their second win in all competitions this season.
While none of Dyche’s squad have exactly shone this season, Pickford has come in for plenty of criticism and Liverpool Echo journalist and podcaster Buckland has told Dyche to send him a “shot across the bows” by picking Begovic instead.
Speaking on The Royal Blue YouTube channel (16 September, 46:05) he said: “I’d like to see Begovic come in for Pickford by the way.
“I think I’d like to see Begovic given a go. Begovic or Virginia over Pickford. I’d just give him a shot across the bows to be fair because he played against Doncaster, but I’d like to see that.”
Will Everton axe Pickford for Goodison Park clash v Southampton?
Rightly or wrongly Pickford has been the target of plenty of criticism over the first couple of weeks of the Premier League season having been an ever-present in Dyche’s side’s difficult start to the campaign.
While most supporters and pundits are in agreement that there was very little the England number one could do to stop Jhon Duran’s wonder strike against Aston Villa last time out, he has made his fair share of mistakes.
Picking Begovic ahead of the Englishman would certainly as a shot across the bows to Pickford as Buckland suggests, but it would also raise questions about how highly the Blues boss rates Joao Virginia, the Toffees’ number two.
On the face of it, it seems likely that Dyche will stick with Pickford rather than make changes for the sake of it. Everton need a win quickly and they will feel the best way to do that is by going as close to full strength as they can.
The Carabao Cup may not be a priority this season, but winning is a good habit and the Toffees need some confidence under their belt.
