Everton fight for another Euro transfer with rival bid incoming - report

Everton are continuing the fight for a deal to sign Florentino Luis despite the arrival of Leicester City in the race, according to Record.

The Portuguese outlet reported via their website on 30 June that the Foxes are set to table a bid for the Benfica midfielder imminently but the Toffees remain in the race.

The club have been interested in the 24-year-old for some time, having reportedly had a €30million [£25.5m] offer rejected in January [Ben Jacobs, 22 May], with Correio da Manha reporting via their print edition on 31 May (page 11) that they had returned with another bid of the same amount.

The club’s interest comes as star midfielder Amadou Onana is expected to leave this summer [Alan Myers, 14 June], having already attracted multiple transfer approaches.

Florentino Luis could replace Amadou Onana at Everton

It clearly isn’t going to be cheap to land Luis but if Onana does leave as seems likely it should provide a decent boost to the transfer budget at Goodison Park.

Having only arrived two seasons ago, and with a sell-on clause included in his transfer from Lille [Fabrizio Romano], the full fee won’t be available to turn around for incoming deals.

But after the exits of Lewis Dobbin and Ben Godfrey it looks like the profit and sustainability concerns have largely been addressed ahead of the 30 June deadline, and with the Dan Friedkin takeover moving in the right direction the situation is looking up.

The permanent signing of Iliman Ndiaye from Marseille for a not-insignificant amount of money is set to be sealed [Foot Mercato, 24 June], and Jack Harrison has returned on loan.

Whether those signals mean that the Toffees can enter into a genuine big-money transfer race isn’t yet clear, but there will be a space to fill in midfield if an Onana transfer is sealed.

Leicester’s interest in Luis may have a bearing on the future of Wilfred Ndidi, with an offer reportedly made to the Nigerian already [Sacha Tavolieri, 29 April] amid uncertainty over whether he will sign an extension at the King Power.

Sean Dyche could probably do with one or the other if he is to see Onana follow Andre Gomes out of the club, but it appears there is a possible threat of Steve Cooper ending up with both at the King Power.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are prominent in the race to sign a new striker who has been offered up for transfer.
