Everton PSR position to worsen if Dyche development plays out - report

Everton will worsen their position with PSR if they part company with Sean Dyche, according to The Athletic.

Patrick Boyland’s article [20 September] detailed that the club value Dyche, despite finding themselves rock-bottom of the Premier League without a point as a crucial fixture at Leicester City looms.

The Toffees are understood to be reluctant to sack Dyche in the near future due to a gratitude for the job he has done, coupled with the fact chopping and changing managers would do nothing for stability on their ongoing PSR concerns.

The report noted: “Nobody at Goodison wants the cycle of managerial churn to continue if it can be helped, while the cost of a further change would also see their PSR position worsen.

“There is an understanding he has been made to work in challenging conditions and, having got them out of tougher predicaments before, can do so again this time around.

“But results need to improve heading into what looks to be a more favourable run.”

Everton would lose even further stability with Sean Dyche sack

When a club is navigating through boardroom chaos in the way Everton is – alongside the PSR woes they suffered with last season – there needs to be some stability in other areas.

Dyche represents that, having been a constant since early 2023 to steer the club to safety in each of the past two seasons. Whether another replacement can undergo a transition phase, get the dressing room onside and deliver the same result is indeed doubtful.

It will reassure sections of the fanbase that Dyche remains well considered at Goodison Park; others will be frustrated by the news in their pursuit of change.

Maybe fresh ideas feel like the promised land to some supporters, but at what cost? There is simply no way Everton in their current predicament this season can aim beyond what Dyche has already twice delivered.

With PSR becoming such a dominant force in English football as clubs scramble to meet accounting stipulations, even defeat at Leicester this weekend is unlikely to see the manager face the chop.
