Everton are sorting the paperwork for Mason Holgate’s last-minute loan move to West Brom, according to Alan Myers.
The journalist reported via his personal X account [30 August] that the deal for the Baggies “looks like a goer” in the final stages of the window.
Holgate spent six months at The Hawthorns during the 2018/19 campaign, making 23 appearances and scoring once, admitting that it was “the best” thing he ever did [Daily Star].
Mason Holgate nearing Everton exit to West Brom
Given the Toffees’ current state of play in defence, it is no surprise to see the rarely-seen Holgate being linked with a last-ditch exit.
Even without Jarrad Branthwaite returning from injury, the centre-half has only been able to play five minutes of football so far this season, with James Tarkowski, Jake O’Brien and Michael Keane all ahead of him in the pecking order.
With a lack of minutes during the 2022/23 campaign, making just five league starts, he spent the majority of last term on loan with Southampton and Sheffield United – neither spell working out for the player.
He made seven appearances at St Mary’s Stadium before falling down the ranks, and his spell at Bramall Lane was not much better, receiving a red card after just three games for the Blades.
While the centre-half is certainly not in any good form, a move back to The Hawthorns could help to revitalise his career, which would be a win-win for the Toffees.
A superb loan spell would see Holgate’s transfer fee shoot up, which could either see more clubs come in for him next summer or the Baggies want to make the deal permanent.
Dyche has a plethora of defensive options, and it seems like Holgate’s future now lies elsewhere than Goodison Park, so a move back to the Midlands looks to be the right choice for his career.
In other Everton news, one PL club are under pressure to offload a player before the 11pm deadline as the Toffees eye a deal.
