Andy Dunn has suggested that spirits have been raised at Everton after the news that Seamus Coleman has signed a new one-year contract with the club.

The Irishman joined the Toffees from Sligo Rovers in a deal worth a well-documented £60,000 in one of the biggest bargains in modern football back in January 2009.

News that Coleman is staying put for another year has been welcomed by players and fans alike, and Dunn thinks it is good news amid a general wave of uncertainty at Everton.

In his column for the Sunday Mirror (16 June, page 71), Dunn wrote: “There is not always something for Everton fans to smile about, but the snippet that Seamus Coleman has signed for a 16th season with the club surely raised the spirits, for a moment at least.”

The 35-year-old has been a silver lining in a tough period for the Toffees, who have managed to keep their heads above water in the Premier League despite plenty of off-field uncertainty in the past few years.

Coleman has seen it all at Everton from European football under Roberto Martinez to pitch invasions for avoiding relegation under Frank Lampard.

Although he isn’t likely to play as many minutes next season, his impact on the dressing room and the fans will be huge.

He registered just 662 minutes last campaign across 12 appearances [FotMob] but it is his presence that Sean Dyche wants around the place.

Keeping hold of him could prove to be important ahead of the move away from Goodison Park into the Bramley Moore Dock next year.

In a time of ownership and financial uncertainty, keeping hold of key faces like Coleman can only be seen as a positive thing.

There is no guarantee that he will play many minutes but having him around the place has been met by great positivity from fans.

In other Everton news, a European club are keen to get their striker off their wage bill with a £26million transfer on the cards.
