Everton insiders have been left unimpressed by Manchester United’s pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite’s signature, the Liverpool Echo have been told.
The newspaper reported via its online edition on Wednesday (17 July) that this has come about following Man United’s two offers for the centre-back, which were well below the Toffees’ valuation of £75million.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe claimed United would “not be held to ransom” over the prospective transfer, with the two sides wide apart on their valuations.
Everton insiders speak out on Jarrad Branthwaite transfer saga
The Toffees have every right to demand a specific fee, especially after the defender’s breakout season under Sean Dyche last term, forming a superb partnership with James Tarkowski.
The sale of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa will only increase the club’s chances of keeping the 21-year-old at Goodison Park this summer, with a much lower risk of facing PSR problems.
Of course, the Red Devils can be disappointed with not being able to sign Branthwaite for what they believe he is worth, but they cannot fault Sean Dyche’s side for sticking to their guns.
The youngster was part of a defence that only conceded more goals than Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool in the Premier League last season, and without the points deductions, Everton would have finished just shy of the top half of the table.
Dyche would have an extremely large hole to fill if Branthwaite were to leave the club this summer, so a £75m fee seems more than reasonable, especially given the player’s prospects and talent.
The Branthwaite transfer saga is likely not over, with much of the summer transfer window left for Man United to make another bid.
However, it remains to be seen if a third offer will be made due to the difference in opinion when it comes to the price tag.
