Asmir Begovic has responded to Graeme Souness labelling Everton teammate Jordan Pickford a “bomb scare”.
Speaking on talkSPORT back in January, Souness did not hold back with his criticism of Pickford, saying that he is “an accident waiting to happen”.
Appearing on the same radio station this week, Begovic was asked if the Liverpool legend had a point, to which he responded: “Oh no. God bless Graeme [Souness]. I think what he says there is quite difficult to take in really.
“I’ve seen him [Pickford] now for three years and work with him on a daily basis and seen his quality, and I can genuinely say he’s world-class.
“I’ve seen it with my own two eyes and work with him and we’ve pushed each other, gained respect and of course, we’re friends now.
“So I think he’s developed over the years.
“He’s getting to an age now where he’s coming into really his best stage of his career having done what he’s done.”
Jordan Pickford’s importance to Everton cannot be understated
Although Pickford has been at Everton for eight years and made 70 appearances for England, he continues to divide opinion among fans and pundits.
More often than not the criticism thrown at the 30-year-old is harsh, as evidenced by Souness and John Aldridge’s comments.
While it is true that he has that odd error in him, there is no denying that he has established himself as a key player and leader for both club and country.
One does not simply win the Player of the Season award at a club like Everton for three campaigns in a row without being good at what he does.
Likewise, his involvement in England’s UEFA European Championship runs in 2020 and 2024 deserves due credit.
At the end of the day, it appears Pickford will be at the end of harsh criticism until he hangs up his boots.
Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the goalkeeper will shut out the noise and continue to focus on the task at hand as he has always done.
