Gabby Agbonlahor has labelled Jordan Pickford “erratic” as the Everton goalkeeper was the subject of a “world-class” debate.
The 30-year-old has experienced a mixed start to the 2024/25 campaign, conceding 15 goals in his first seven league games, but most recently saving a penalty to help earn a draw against Newcastle United.
Pickford now has 287 appearances for the Toffees since arriving at Goodison Park in the summer of 2017, also winning 71 caps for England, earning mountains of respect along the way.
Asked live on talkSPORT [17 October, 6:26am] if Pickford is “world-class”, Agbonlahor said: “I wouldn’t say world-class but I do think he’s a very good goalkeeper. He’s very good with his feet, he can make important saves, but sometimes he’s too erratic.
“He’d do my head in if I played for Everton though. He’s erratic. He’ll make a save and come scream at the whole team. That’s your job. Just make a save and get on with it.”
Is Everton ace Jordan Pickford a world-class shot-stopper?
Fans will argue that there is little left for Pickford to prove on the football pitch, having saved the Toffees on multiple occasions and always been a consistent performer for his country.
Of course, he has never played for one of the “big-six” teams in the Premier League, but that should not take away from him being a world-class goalkeeper.
Sean Dyche certainly has the 30-year-old to thank for the Toffees’ survival last season, having only kept fewer clean sheets than Arsenal’s David Raya, though he did have Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski ahead of him.
This season has been much harder on the Merseyside club, suffering four tough defeats to start the new league campaign, but things are finally looking up after winning five points from their last three games.
Pickford will likely play a crucial role as the Premier League season continues, and few fans can argue about him being “world-class” despite Agbonlahor’s opinion.
