Everton have been told to pull the plug on any plans to sack Sean Dyche despite their poor start to the season.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes that Dyche is a “specialist” at helping teams in circumstances such as this.
The 53-year-old is under increasing pressure after Everton’s winless start to the season, which has left the club in the relegation zone.
Everton have the right man in charge to steer them out of trouble
“I don’t see that as a good fit at all,” Robinson told Football Insider about Southgate being linked to Everton.
“Gareth Southgate has been out of club management for a long time, so we’ve got no real recent history or record to compare that to you look at what he’s done with the England side, you look at the way that the team plays.
“Sean Dyche is a specialist of getting the best out of a small squad on a tight budget. I wouldn’t be confident of Gareth Southgate going in there and saving Everton from relegation in his first job because that’s the remit, Everton have got to stay in the Premiership this year.
“They’ve had a really poor start, they’ve got to go into the new stadium next year with Premier League football. Sean Dyche is capable of doing that, I’ve said from the start it’s not going to be pretty at times, it’s going to be a tough watch and it has been for a couple of seasons.
“What he’s done there with the points deductions that they’ve had and kept them in the Premier League.
“Talk of his tenure as manager, it’s always going to happen when a new owner comes in.
“A new owner has new ideas and when a football team has underperformed like the perception of Everton is, the new owner is going to want to put his own stamp on things, which is only natural.
“And Sean understands things like that, you listen to his press conference he talks quite openly about dealing with owners and the expectations of new owners and what they want.
“If you’re going to get rid of Sean Dyche and you’re going to sack Sean Dyche, who [are] you going to go and look for?
“You’re going to go and look for Sean Dyche.”
