Everton are interested in signing Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis before the transfer window closes, TEAMtalk reports.
According to the outlet’s website on 13 August the USMNT international could make a late exit from the Spanish side before the deadline.
Sources have indicated that he would prefer to stay for another season but a departure remains possible, with the Toffees looking to sign a midfielder.
Cardoso, 22, only headed to La Liga from Internacional last January, starting all but four of their subsequent league games last term.
USMNT international a Kalvin Phillips substitute for Everton
There is not believed to be a huge amount of leeway for the Toffees to finish off their transfer window after five signings so far, three on permanent deals.
According to i News on 12 August it will only be loans until the deadline so it would surely be a long shot for Cardoso to be the man that comes in.
If the American isn’t looking to leave and he was a regular starter at Betis last season it is hard to see why they would let him go without an offer they couldn’t refuse.
Everton aren’t in a position to make one of those unless they are forced into a big-money sale for one of their star men such as Jarrad Branthwaite or Jordan Pickford.
Sean Dyche’s first choice appears to be Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City, who has the obvious benefits of being available and familiar with the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola has seemingly never really needed the former Leeds United star and a miserable loan at West Ham saw things go from bad to worse for the 28-year-old.
City are now thought to be willing to sanction another loan [The Times, 13 August] and Dyche believes Everton’s proximity to the Englishman’s home in Leeds could make them the best route for him to revive his career [Mirror, 28 May].
But Ipswich and Fulham are both interested as well so back-up targets could be necessary, although Cardoso arriving would be a surprise.
