Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville could not control their laughter while making a prediction for Everton against Brighton on Saturday (17 August).
The Toffees are set to begin the new Premier League campaign by welcoming the Seagulls to Goodison Park with a plethora of new players on show in Sean Dyche’s squad.
Having played each other twice in 1-1 draws last season, the pair were supposed to be predicting the result of the clubs’ next meeting but couldn’t do so without firing a shot at the Toffees.
Speaking via The Overlap on Wednesday (14 August), Neville asked: “They can’t play in the sun, can they?
Confused, Carragher replied: “Because of the what?,” to which Neville said: “The sun – Everton can’t play in the sun. It’s just too hot for them. It’s like they need it to be cold and dark.
With both now in fits of laughter, Carragher said: “Sean Dyche can’t manage in the sun. He gets too red. You know what? I’m going to go 1-0 to Everton because of the new manager at Brighton.”
Everton to claim victory over Brighton in Premier League opener?
The recent history between the two sides would suggest that both sets of fans are in for an exciting opener to the 2024/25 campaign.
The Toffees and the Seagulls shared the spoils in both meetings last season, but the latter are now without Roberto De Zerbi, with Fabian Hurzeler coming in to take his spot.
They are also without key midfielder Pascal Gross, who joined Borussia Dortmund this summer, as well as Deniz Undav and Facundo Buonanotte.
Until the new season kicks off, it is impossible to tell just from pre-season friendlies how each team will fare in the new campaign, but Dyche and his team will feel confident right now.
Dyche and Kevin Thelwell have quietly gone about their transfer business this summer, with exciting talents Jake O’Brien, Jesper Lindstrom, Iliman Ndiaye and Tim Iroegbunam added to the squad.
Goals were often a concern for the Merseyside club last season, but with the new attacking additions to the squad, Brighton may be fearful ahead of their first game on Saturday.
In other Everton news, the Toffees are being pushed to sign Tammy Abraham before August 30.
