John Wenham agrees with Dermot Gallagher that Guglielmo Vicario was right to avoid a red card for Tottenham against Brentford on Saturday (21 September).
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes that at most the goalkeeper should have perhaps been booked.
It comes after Vicario appeared to handle the ball outside the penalty area as Spurs beat Brentford 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
However, ex-Premier League referee Gallagher said, via Sky Sports Premier League on X (23 September) that the incident was “100 per cent not a red card.”
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – agrees with this assessment.
“Gallagher explained this on Sky Sports News,” Wenham said.
“He said at most it would have been a yellow card. There were lots of defenders and other players around that could have blocked any potential chance.
“Therefore, it wasn’t an obvious goalscoring opportunity. As a result, VAR couldn’t intervene in the incident. I’m not sure exactly when they can and can’t intervene. However, on that one, they couldn’t.
“Therefore, at most, it was a booking, but that is it.”
Guglielmo Vicario avoids red card for Tottenham v Brentford
There will no doubt be plenty of rival supporters unhappy with what happened. However, after Gallagher speaking out, it appears as though the situation is case closed.
Vicario didn’t deserve to be sent off, and had he been booked, it is unlikely the game would have changed much. However, that is not to say that he doesn’t need to work on his flaws.
The goalkeeper has come under some criticism in recent times. Therefore, he will need to show signs of improvement, especially if he wants to earn a new Spurs contract.
