'Something out of nothing' - King backs Daniel Levy after recent Tottenham controversy

Bryan King has backed Daniel Levy’s decision to relieve David Pleat of his duties at Tottenham.

The ex-Spurs scout has urged Pleat to “move on” and insisted that a situation has been made “out of nothing.”

It comes after Pleat took a swipe at Levy in his first public interview since being dismissed by the club at the end of last season.

He said (via the Telegraph, 10 September), “I was called in and informed, ‘It’s all data-driven now we don’t need eyes and ears.’ What nonsense.”

However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes it was time for Pleat to finish.

“Pleat is 80 years old,” King said.

“I’ve been in the game as long as him. Therefore, you have to be aware that things move on, and positions change in football clubs. He had a good run, but it was time for him to finish.

“I thought originally, he’d agreed to leave. However, it seems someone has got into his head. I might have understood if Levy had said you can stay in your position but we’re not going to pay you. I don’t think he would be too happy with that either.

“He is a good football man, with good opinions on the game, but he has had his day. Therefore, I would have thought this would be the time to move on.

“This feels like something out of nothing. Pleat has worked at Tottenham for many years in many different roles. He’s now come to the end of it, and he has been very fortunate to work in football.

“I’m sure he has enjoyed his time and Tottenham will be grateful for what he has done. However, accept the chairman’s decision and move on.”

David Pleat takes swipe at Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy

Pleat worked for Tottenham in many different capacities over many years.

He even spent time as caretaker manager on multiple occasions. His most recent role was as a consultant scout for the club. However, Levy clearly felt as though he was no longer needed.

Therefore, while he might have felt hard done by, Pleat also has to accept that every good thing comes to an end.

He has spent many years with Tottenham and will be remembered fondly in North London. Therefore, there is little point in burning any bridges or running any relationships now.
