Scottish Football Association chief Ian Maxwell missed the chance to clear up the Rangers VAR controversy earlier, Ewan Murray says.
Liam Scales’ foul on Vaclav Cerny on the line of the 18-yard box in the Premier Sports Cup final on Sunday [15 December] wasn’t caught by VAR as on-field referee John Beaton gave a free-kick instead of a penalty.
Murray has slammed Maxwell as a “hide and seek champion” after his rare interview and has called him out for hypocrisy after he admitted errors happen.
On his X account [18 December], The Guardian journalist wrote: “It’s ‘the first time he has been asked about a VAR decision’ because he is Scotland’s hide-and-seek champion.
“The SFA could have cleared this up with a statement on Monday morning. It’s Wednesday, and Maxwell is prattling on about transparency.”
Rangers demand answers from Scottish FA for VAR error
The Light Blues have every right to be aggrieved about the decision, and Patrick Stewart made the right call by contacting Willie Collum on his first day in office [Rangers Review, 16 December].
Cerny was fouled in extra time when the game was level, and the Bears could’ve had a chance to win it from the spot before the eventual penalty shootout.
The Gers put in one of their best performance of the season and were hard done by a VAR error.
Philippe Clement has taken massive strides at Rangers in recent weeks, and the display at Hampden Park was worthy of lifting the Scottish League Cup title.
While the Ibrox faithful won’t care about the SFA’s statements as it doesn’t change things, accountability is essential, but Maxwell’s throwaway comments suggest otherwise.
The Light Blues will have another chance to beat Celtic in the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox on 2 January, and Clement finally needs to get a win in the Old Firm derby.
